Hey all!
My name is Sarah Scott and this is my first blog so be patient with me. I always thought I knew my way around a computer enough to get by. In the past few weeks I’ve learnt I was oh so wrong. I have just started what will be an exhilarating nine months on a newspaper journalism course at Cardiff University and as apart of this I have begun my journey of online discovery.
I’m 21 and from Northern Ireland. I hail from the sunny seaside town of Bangor, not the most exciting place on earth but I’ve had fun and adventures growing up there. As I mentioned I’ve recently moved to Cardiff and I love the city. Although it will never replace that space in my heart which belongs to Newcastle, where I did my undergraduate degree in Geography.
I like to think I have lots of passions and dreams in life, a career in journalism being one of them. I would love this dream to take me to far flung areas of the globe investigating and reporting for newspapers whose integrity and news values I admire.
I could easily list all the things I love and all that I hate but I fear this would then begin to look like a Bebo or Facebook page. All I will say is with me what you see is what you get. I am completely serious about my pursuit of a fantastic, stimulating and interesting career in journalism and I hope my drive is apparent. Journalism is about people, about being involved with your community and the wider world and having a nose for news and the truth. I also think it’s about a thirst for knowledge, therefore, I suppose you could say I can be a bit of a nosy person.
As I will explain in my first post my blog is going to incorporate my academic work on online journalism and the future of journalism, but also many posts will be about the interconnectedness of our world today. As part of my undergraduate in Geography it is something which absolutely fasinates me. From the clothes we wear to what we eat and drink, these commodities have travelled hundreds and thousands of miles to get to us. But these links with people across the globe can be easily ignored by consumers. My blog will question many issues to do with this and look at some work by academics which I find inspired me to think more carefully about the world around me.
To sum up though, I am a girl from Bangor who has big dreams and can’t wait to see what happens.
